HISTORY

We are proud of our beautiful slate fronted Lakeland building and you may be interested to read a short summery of its history.

The inscription above the fireplace dates The Yewdale Inn to 1898 in Victorian times. At the time trains ran on the branch line to Coniston station from Millom and beyond. The trains transported slate and copper ore to the docks and visitors from the large cities of the Northwest. Coniston became a popular destination for Lake cruises and with fell walkers and mountaineers.

Throughout most of the 20th century, the establishment was owned by the District Bank, formerly the Manchester & Liverpool District Bank which acquired the Lancaster Bank in 1907. Initially the bank branch was situated in the bar area of the inn and the rest of the building was occupied by the Bank Manager, his family and servants. The old bar itself was adapted from the bank counter which used to be in the centre of the bar area.

In the 1920’s the Bank Manger relocated to more modest accommodation on the ground floor and the rest of the establishment was operated as a guest house and tea rooms. One of the operators, Mr Raymond Ashburn named it ‘The Rayburn Hotel’.

Later in the 1930’s and 40’s the name was changed to ‘The Raeburn Hotel’ and operated by Mrs Kate Graham Seamany. No rent was charged, instead she used to provide cooking and cleaning services to the Bank Manager. Later, the name was changed to ‘The Yewdale Inn’ and reverted to private ownership in the 1970’s until in 2002 it was bought by Scottish & Newcastle Brewery which was later acquired by Heineken.

At the beginning of 2020, previous tenants Jeff and Susie Hart handed over The Yewdale Inn to locally owned Lakes District hospitality group High Spirits Leisure. Well established in the hospitality business with six other local venues, The Yewdale Inn joined the group and after an extensive refurbishment of the kitchens, bar and cafe reopened the doors on the 24th January 2020.

The pub received a fresh new look, with the bar and seating transformed, the existing Y-Cafe was refurbished and re-branded as Enzo’s Caffe & Pizzeria with a traditional wood-fired pizza oven shipped over from Italy and installed in the heart of the new restaurant.
